Allegheny Mountains

When you hear the call of the open road, the Allegheny Mountains are full of twisting, turning routes where you can watch some spectacular scenery unfold. Any time is a good time to hop on your motorcycle and check out these heavenly roads near Greenbrier County that are recommended by our real estate agents.

  • Seneca Skyway
West Virginia's scenic roads inspired a collaboration between the state's Departments of Transportation and Tourism to launch the Mountain Rides program. Seneca Skyway, the inaugural route, was officially designated in May 2022. This six-hour ride, spanning nearly 300 miles, loops from Lewisburg to Davis and back again. Set out from "American's Coolest Small Town" and plan one or more stops at Beartown, Blackwater Falls, and other beautiful state parks along the way. Before returning to Lewisburg, don't miss the neighboring town of White Sulfur Springs and its many historic buildings.

  • Route 33
Route 33 runs from Elkhart, IN to Richmond, VA, but you don't have to leave West Virginia to take in the delights of this wonderful road. The in-state segment of Route 33 is just under 250 miles long. Art lovers and history buffs won't want to miss the town of Weston, home of the Museum of American Glass and the Mountaineer Military Museum. Cool off at Lewis County Park, with a swimming pool that includes slides, diving boards, and a kiddie section. Seneca Rocks, one of West Virginia's major landmarks, is a popular spot for hiking, fishing, and sightseeing.

  • National River Ride
The National River Ride features some of the more picturesque sights in West Virginia. The 123-mile loop begins and ends in Beckley, less than an hour away from Lewisburg homes for sale. Two of the rivers along this route, the New and the Gauley, meet at the town of Gauley Bridge to form the Kanawha River, which is the largest inland waterway in West Virginia. Take a quick side trip two miles southeast of Gauley Bridge to view Kanawha Falls. Another popular attraction is the Prince Depot, located in the town of the same name. Built in 1946 in the iconic Art Deco style of architecture, the depot still serves as a stop for Amtrak's Cardinal passenger train.

  • Route 250
Elkins is the hub for a number of pleasant roads, including Route 250. The West Virginia Division of Culture & History has designated Elkins as one of six qualified art communities in the state, thanks to attractions such as Artists at Work, Mountain Arts District, and the Arts Center. Route 250 passes through the heart of the Monongahela National Forest and to the Appalachian Plateau, showcasing a wide variety of landscapes. If you travel the entire 107 miles, you'll end up in Staunton, VA, where a stroll around town will take you past several stately homes that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Canaan Falls Tour
Stunning Seneca Rocks is also a jumping-off point for the 170-mile Canaan Falls Tour. Much of the land in this bathtub-shaped valley remains undeveloped, making it a great place to get away for some rest and relaxation. In 1974, Canaan Valley was named a Natural National Landmark due to its setting as a "museum" of prehistoric habitats and its unique ecosystem. See a quaint slice of Americana at the Nancy Hanks Memorial, famous as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln's mother.
