  Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort is, unsurprisingly, mostly associated with winter sports. But this massive 11,000-acre wilderness resort is also a great place to visit in summer. Perhaps its most underrated attraction is Shavers Lake, one of Pocahontas County's largest lakes, which is a great place to take a swim and relax by the water. The lake includes canoe, kayak, and paddle board rentals, a 200-foot dock, a sandy swimming beach, picnic areas, and a lakeside restaurant. • Seneca Lake - Pub Rd 1/8, Dunmore, WV 24934
  A beautiful place to do some fishing or paddling off the beaten path, Seneca Lake is a small man-made lake that spans about 3 acres in Pocahontas County. The lake is located within Seneca State Forest, the largest and oldest state forest in West Virginia. Trout are stocked in this long, narrow lake every spring, and anglers can catch bass and sunfish here in summer. The surrounding mountains are densely wooded right down to the lakeshore, making this a particularly picturesque spot to take out a canoe or kayak.
  
  
• Greenbrier River - Marlinton, WV 24954
  The Greenbrier River meanders across 162 miles of West Virginia and traverses the entire length of Pocahontas County from north to south. It's a phenomenal paddling river, one of the few in the part of the country to flow entirely undammed along its entire course. The 16-mile section from Marlinton to Denmar is an ideal day trip, with a convenient put-in at Marlinton's Stillwater Park. The Greenbrier River is also an underrated fishing river, and it's worth packing a rod to make a few casts for the river's hefty smallmouth bass. 
  
  
• Lake Buffalo - Forest Rd 54, Bartow, WV 24920
  A quiet, 22-acre lake tucked in among the rolling hills of Monongahela National Forest, Lake Buffalo is a perfect spot to get away from crowds and spend some time immersed in nature. Whether you come here to fish for trout, paddle a canoe, or hike the Buffalo Lake Trail that circles the lake, you can count on peace and tranquility. Boats are allowed on the lake but are restricted to electric motors and non-powered craft. Swimming is not allowed. You can also camp at a handful of primitive tent sites nearby. 
  
  
• Cranberry River - Richwood, WV 26261
  One of the best trout streams in West Virginia, the Cranberry River begins in Pocahontas County before flowing into neighboring Nicholas County. Most of the river lies within National Forest land, and its banks are easily accessed via a series of forest roads and hiking trails. Wild brook trout are available in the upper part of the river in Pocahontas County, while lower sections have been stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout. The Cranberry River's small size makes it ideal for wading, and you can camp along the river at the Cranberry Campground.
