West Virginia is home to stunning nature retreats that offer various activities for all ages.

Earth Day is coming up on Saturday, April 22, 2023. This holiday is an occasion to celebrate nature, and if you're looking for an excuse to explore the outdoors in Pocahontas County, we can't think of a better opportunity.

If you've been busy looking at Marlinton homes for sale lately, we encourage you to take a break on Earth Day. Spend the day visiting one or more of these beautiful parks or public lands in Pocahontas County.

  • Seneca State Forest: 10135 Browns Creek Rd., Dunmore, WV 24934
    Seneca State Forest
is the oldest and largest state forest in West Virginia, and it is conveniently close to Dunmore homes for sale. Much of the land is a lush, deciduous forest with dense vegetation. More than 30 miles of walking and biking trails weave through the forest, so you can take a long stroll and get a good feel for the area.

Seneca State Forest is also a great place to fish. Seneca Lake is well stocked with trout, bass, and bluegill. There are also several horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and playgrounds within the park.

  • Watoga State Park: 4800 Watoga Park Rd., Marlinton, WV 24954
    Watoga State Park
encompasses more than 10,000 acres of mountainous land. It's a beautiful place to take a hike, mountain bike, or go fishing in Watoga Lake. There's also a museum on-site where you can learn more about the park and the region's natural history.

  • Falls of Hills Creek: Hills Creek Rd., Hillsboro, WV 24946
    Falls of Hills Creek
is a hidden gem that's well worth a visit on Earth Day. Located just off the highway, you'll find a natural area featuring three waterfalls. The lower falls, measuring 63 feet, are some of the tallest in the state. Falls of Hills Creek is accessible via a set of wooden steps. Consider stopping by after checking out Hillsboro homes for sale.

  • Cranberry Glades Botanical Area: Route 39/55, Hillsboro, WV 24946
    The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area
is a large bog where many cranberries are grown. Visitors can wonder at the bog's spongy ground and the unusual plants that grow here – including some insect-eating plants.

The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area is home to more than 60 species of plants. A half-mile boardwalk offers views of the most interesting parts of the bog, but there are also more than 60 miles of additional trails to walk if desired.

  • Beartown State Park: Beartown Rd., Renick, WV 24966
    Beartown State Park
is nestled on the eastern side of Droop Mountain. With over 100 acres of land, it is best known for its rocky cliffs and overhangs. There is a boardwalk that offers amazing views of the park's most wonderful natural features.
