Watoga State Park

When we have clients looking at Marlinton homes for sale, we often recommend they visit Watoga State Park. Nestled in the mountains, this 10,000-acre park is a lovely place to explore or just relax in nature. You'll find it at 4800 Watoga Park Rd, Marlinton, WV 24954. Here are seven of the top things to do when you visit.

  1. Hike the Allegheny Trail
The Allegheny Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park. It stretches for 5.5 miles from its intersection with the Appalachian Trail. This trail is rated moderate to difficult. Expect some steep uphills, rocky areas, and a few narrow sections. Definitely wear your hiking boots, and bring poles if you have them.

  2. Hike the Lake Trail
For an easier hiking experience, try the Lake Trail. It's an easy 1.5-mile trail that encircles Watoga Lake. You'll see the dam, boat launch, and some stunning views of the water as you walk. This would be a good trail for families with young children. It begins and ends at the pool parking lot.

  3. Fish at Watoga Lake
Watoga Lake is regularly stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, trout, and channel catfish. It's a really rewarding place to fish, but you do need to have a West Virginia fishing license to do so. There are lots of places to fish from the shore, but many people also go out on small boats. Get an early start; the lake tends to get quite busy during good fishing weather.

  4. Swim in the Outdoor Pool
The outdoor pool at Watoga State Park opens on Memorial Day weekend. It's then open daily from 11 am - 6 pm. The pool has a deep end and a shallow end, making it suitable for swimmers of all levels. Floatation devices are recommended for young kids. There will be lifeguards working while the pool is open, and there are plenty of lounge chairs on the pool deck for parents who want to kick back and relax.

  5. Bike the Greenbrier River Trail
The Greenbrier River Trail is smooth and perfect for biking. You can access the trail from Seebert Road. It runs for more than 70 miles along the Greenbrier River, so you can go as far as you like before turning around. Be prepared to share the trail with equestrians and hikers. Biking is also allowed on many of the hiking trails, but they don't tend to be as smooth and navigable.

  6. Play Tennis or Volleyball
The park has well-maintained volleyball courts and tennis courts where you can hit a ball around or play a pickup game. Do plan on bringing your own ball and other equipment. There are pavilions and picnic benches near the volleyball and tennis courts, so consider planning a picnic lunch for after your game.

  7. Play Disc Golf
Watoga State Park has its own disc golf course, and it is quite popular with local disc golfers. It's a 9-hole course with dirt tees. Conditions are usually dry. Four of the baskets are located along a trail, and the remaining five are in fields. Dogs are allowed on the course, so be aware. Deer are often spotted here, too.

Whether you go for a hike, play a round of disc golf, or lounge in the pool, we hope you enjoy your visit to Watoga State Park. If you're still looking for Marlinton or Snowshoe homes for sale, don't hesitate to contact us soon. Our real estate agents would be happy to help.
