Let's take a closer look at your options:
- Snowshoe Bike Park – See Website for Location in Snowshoe, WV
Snowshoe Bike Park is an iconic 25-mile span consisting of nearly 40 individual trails. Considered advanced and consistently rated one of the top three bike trails in West Virginia, it offers nearly 1,500 vertical feet of descent. New cyclists can benefit from machine-groomed trails. Experts may venture a bit further afield to enjoy berms, jump lines, and many carefully designed features.
- Western Territory – See Website for Location in Snowshoe, WV
Western Territory is an eight-mile stretch for expert cyclists only. Offering ten trails, it takes the form of a downhill race course. The slope is used as a ski slope in the winter. As a result, it should be considered a fearsome challenge: Highly technical, with plenty of twists and turns and lots of loose rocks and roots that can prove dangerous. After riding down, you'll have the chance to take a shuttle back up.
- Gauley Headwaters – See Website for Location in Slatyfork, WV
Gauley Headwaters is ranked among the top #2,000 bike trails in the world and sits in the midst of the enchanting Monongahela National Forest. The single-track descent is hailed as the tightest downhill run anywhere in Pocahontas County, leading down to Tea Creek campground. Rocks and hills are abundant throughout the track but are broken up by stretches of smooth downhill terrain.
- Props Run Trail – See Website for Location in Slatyfork, WV
Props Run Trail is best accessed by shuttle, as you'd need to climb about six miles of gravel road to get to the starting point. It is known for the beautiful overlook of the valley offered at its highest point. With about 19 miles of trail to see, nearly half the total length is downhill. Described as a fun, yet challenging trail by its fans, it can be enjoyed by intermediate riders who take it at a slower pace.
- Gauley Mountain Trail – See Website for Location in Slatyfork, WV
Gauley Mountain Trail is a five-mile single-track mountain trail that breaks out into double track at a few select stretches of terrain. Although there are a few hazards scattered here and there – such as the steep, rocky spots, occasional mud holes, and a few tight areas – it has been acknowledged as one of the best local trails in Slatyfork for beginners to gain experience.
- Red Run Trail – See Website for Location in Slatyfork, WV
Red Run Trail is one of the most advanced mountain trails in the region. Although it reaches a modest distance of only 2.5 miles, it is a fiendishly tough wilderness trail with a slew of technical challenges. The single-track loop configuration loses just under 400 feet of elevation during the ride. If you're parked at Tea Creek Mountain campground, passing through the campground is a fine way to finish your ride.
