When you invest in a ski property, the town where that home is located is just as important as the property itself. You'll want to put a lot of thought into where you choose to buy.   • Proximity to the Slopes
    For obvious reasons, a good ski town needs to be close to the slopes. If those slopes aren't located within the town itself, they should be no more than 15 to 20 minutes away from most properties in the area. The quality of the slopes also plays a role here. Exciting, highly challenging slopes will be more attractive to expert skiers, while hobbyists and families are typically more interested in gentler, more scenic paths. The best ski towns have both types of slopes available, making them attractive to the widest possible market.

  • Local Amenities
    Ski towns are more than just recreational areas – they should also provide the amenities that help people live comfortably. Even the most devoted ski enthusiasts need access to things like grocery stores, banks, and laundromats. Look for a ski town that has a wide range of businesses operating nearby. Depending on your family's needs, you might also want to choose a town with a school, hospital, or community center. This way, those services are always within reach when you're enjoying time on the slopes. 

  • Average Home Price
    High home prices are always a good indicator of a town's desirability, but not everyone can afford to buy at the top of the market. Instead, it's better to look for a ski town with home prices that fit your budget.   • A Hot Rental Market
    Aside from home pricing trends, the level of demand for rental properties in the area another key indicator of a ski town's value. Look for a town where it's known to be difficult to book a place to stay for a weekend getaway on short notice. These places are clearly fun enough to attract a lot of attention from out-of-town tourists, and if you choose to rent out your property later on, you'll have no trouble finding people willing to pay. 

  • Year-Round Appeal
    Ideally, a ski town should have plenty of things for residents to do during the off-season when the slopes are not accessible. Many of these locations have incredible hiking trails around the hills, woods, and mountains that skiers use in the wintertime. Some are also close to rivers and lakes where you can swim or fish in the warm months and skate in the cold ones. If the town has a resort, movie theater, or entertainment complex within it, it can even offer some indoor fun when the weather too harsh for outdoor activities.
